Meet the Nalane Family
Nalane Group (Pty) Ltd is a 100% black female owned company, with directors and sisters, Mantshadi and Karabo Mokoena. The sisters started the company in 2014, after struggling to find suitable hair products to grow their hair naturally in 2014. The sisters then created Nalane ea Afrika a natural haircare range to address the gap in the market.
To create the products, the sisters researched African indigeneous plant oils and butters that were traditionally used to soften and moisturise natural hair but have since been forgotten. Since its inception, the company has created products that demonstrate that it is possible to have healthy growing African hair without the use of harmful chemicals.
The company’s focus is to use African indigenous oils and butters, as the sisters believe that their beauty is part of their heritage and that nature as well as the environment caters for all our beauty needs. Hence the name of the hair-care range Nalane ea Afrika which translates to ‘African Heritage’ in Sesotho.
We exist to enhance and celebrate every African by using nature to unleash their God given beauty!
Our Mission
We aim to provide every African with the means to celebrate their beauty without the use of harmful chemicals. With the help of nature, we wish to demonstrate that it is possible to have healthy, growing African hair without having to use harmful chemicals.
Our Values
- We focus on using “Natural products” which are products derived from plants indigenous to Africa;
- We only use suppliers that promote sustainable production and fair trade, contributing to the economic development of African countries;
- We aim to demystify the misconception of African Beauty by encouraging more Africans to wear their hair naturally and celebrate their African beauty. We would like to achieve this by educating them on how to manage and grow healthy ethnic African hair without chemical processing;
- We use only natural and non-harmful ingredients that are not damaging to the hair, skin and the environment in general.
What differentiates our products
- We have created products with our clients’ needs in mind and provide convenience and makes their beauty regimes easier by:
- Designing a daily aftercare regime using an easy to remember 3 step method, based on the well known LOC method.
- Possibly reducing the time it takes the customer to wash their hair on “wash-day” with our conditioning shampoo, which is a two-in-one product that cleanses and conditions in one product.
- Providing a salon range strictly for Natural Hair Care that is chemical free / non harmful and provides customers with a salon experience.
- We focus on indigenous African ingredients that were traditionally used in African culture e.g. Mafura / Mahogany Butter and Kalahari Melon Oil. These ingredients have since been forgotten and are apart of our heritage.
- We are Proudly South African certified.
- We own a Department of Environmental Affairs Bioprospecting permit which promotes sustainable use of the indigenous oils/butters and promotes communities to benefit from their traditional knowledge.
- Our products are natural and free from non-harmful ingredients that are damaging to the hair, skin and the environment in general.
